Simon met his fair lady now just over two years, having found each other using 'modern technology' let's say. After just over a year together, whilst enjoying a pre-Christmas weekend away in Venice, and whilst suffering with man flu, Simon popped the question whilst overlooking the Grand Canal. She said yes.
Simon & Laura live in Bristol, with two cats, one horse and one tortoise. One day they are hoping to move to sunny Italy and start making bambinos. Before then however, they have the small matter of the wedding...
Ever wondered what a wedding is like from a Grooms perspective? Over the next 12 months Simon, one of the founders of The Bridal File will regulary blog about the preparations for his & Laura's big-day preparations!
Wedding Stress?

So, earlier on today we had to go to the local registrar and give notice of our marriage. Apparently it's put on a board somewhere and there is 15 days to see if anyone contests it. In formal situations like this I am quite well known of throwing in a few curve ball questions, partly because I find it quite amusing seeing people's reactions to an obscure question they don't normally get asked, and partly because I was also genuinely wondering if they get many people who make a point of going to their local registrars, scanning the notices board and seeing if there is any partnerships they wish to contest. So now we have to wait 15 days until we are giving the official thumbs up to tie the knot.
Also slightly amusing was the number of times we were asked if we were related, if our parents have ever been related, if our grandparents were related, if our third cousins may have had dogs from the same litter... the quesitoning was relentless. I had to leave the room whilst Laura was asked questions, and then she had to leave so I could do the same. Since neither of us are illegal immigrants, or here on some kind of time restricted Visa this seemed like overkill - even more so given the somewhat thin and drafty door seperating us. I heard everything Laura said. We passed. We didn't cheat. Honest.
On the short drive on the way home I was struck by how easy this whole 'wedding planning' process seems to be. I've always heard people talk about it as one of the most stressful things you will do in your life and yet so far the simple fact is - it's been easy. We agreed on the venue having only seen 2 others, Laura picked her dream dress on day one of looking, we got our perfect band with just a few emails, and the food for our reception was decided whilst sharing a lift into work the other day. Whilst listening to Laura's interrogation at the registrars I was flicking through a bridal magazine looking over the checklist of what to do by when - and we are clearly way ahead of the game at the moment, and we havent even really been trying to be.
Truth is there is no reason for a wedding to be stressful, it doesnt need to take over your life, and I'll go out on a limb and say that if you are truly meant to be with someone then planning your wedding should be something you enjoy doing together.
What a closing paragraph that is. It makes me sound like Sarah Jessica-Parkers character in Sex and the City. Only I look less like a foot.
